For this year’s biennial ‘open exhibition’, Southampton City Art Gallery invited artists, amateur and professional, across Hampshire to create new artworks responding to the themes of journeys, migration and the sea, for a Mayflower 400-themed exhibition. The artists and writers in the exhibition reckon with racial injustice and uncertainty due to COVID-19, among other subject matter. Since 2012, he has exhibited with Tripoli Gallery and had his first solo exhibition with the gallery in 2018 titled Where, where is the town. Montauk-based artist Lucien Smith’s exhibition at the Herzog & de Meuron–designed Parrish Museum marks the young talent’s first-ever museum show. A group of Puritan Separatists, who have become known as the Pilgrim Fathers, were amongst the 102 passengers on board. The vibrant works are a tonic of relief for the viewer as well as the artist, who found a joyful outlet in the power of art during these distressing times.
