Opening the album, it finds a band returning after some time away and revisiting their origin story in an effort to excavate that initial spark. Doves previously released four albums titled 'The Last Soul', 'The Last Broadcast', 'Some Cities' and 'Kingdom of Rust' between the years 2000 to 2009. Distorted guitars arc, the drums tend towards syncopated patterns not a million miles from the breakbeat of Sub Sub’s 1991 Haçienda classic Space Face, the piano on Mother Silver Lake has a distinct hint of late-80s Italo-house about it. In a sense, The Universal Want settles into a similar zone as Kingdom Of Rust did 11 years ago. But rather than refinement of the past or breaking ground for a new chapter, Kingdom Of Rust felt a little true to its title — tired and worn, the once majestic architecture of Doves’ songwriting now wearing down.
