I've given this gadget 5 stars because it works beautifully, BUT, it is fiddly to get going, you need to follow the instructions (however odd they look) carefully. Amazing Maxi Knitting Mill created by Prym for quick and easy knitting. I ordered it last week, it arrived on Monday (hail my delivery lady, she calls my mobile to ask when I’ll be at home) and I’ve already tried it out. Also, avoid yarn that is too easy to separate into strands, hooks will damage it. I ordered it not expecting much having read the reviews but it works brilliantly and as someone who remembers doing this with a cotton reel and four nails this is so fast. Churning out metres of the stuff now, have to admit it's quite addictive. Thanks. Can we do diffrent stiches or only purl? Instead, our system considers things like how recent a review is and if the reviewer bought the item on Amazon. The tubes produced by this mill would be useless as socks for anything bigger than ants, I’m afraid – this is 4 stitches around. I’ve tried using a “french knitting doll”, but the process was about as fast as manual knitting, so the only gain was that it produced a narrow tube. Most are of the 4 nails in a cotton reel design, but this one looked different. I’d say no thicker than 180m/100g, if it’s normal wool. I followed the instructions and watched a you tube video, but the item was not doing as it showed on the video. The Prym Comfort Knitting Mill makes it easy to knit I-Cord tubes for embellishments, weaving, accessories & more. If you cast 40, then the mill will stop you after each row (not allowing you to ovetshoot ;) the edge). Before you get half of your yarn collection through the mill for the sheer pleasure of getting a nifty outcome, stop and think how you’re going to use these tubes. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness. You could cast less, but you will find it a bit harder to turn then. Try again. I will never go back to knitting i-cord by hand again!! Also, it’s cheaper. Prym Mini Knitting Mill, Dark VioletOK, so having read all the reviews was not expecting it work initially and I wasnt disappointed it didn't . They add an extra just typed sheet of hints and tips including buying a wool unwinder. 250m/100g if it’s acrylic yarn (acrylic is usually fluffier/lighter). The stitches get very long (“tall”) and tube looks ugly. When you want to pause for a while I suggest using an elastic band to hold the yarn tightly to the body of the mill - I found out the hard way when a loop came of the needle because the tension was relaxed too much. You can still see all customer reviews for the product. Now PRYM has a Maxi model and just-a-mill model. Returned for a refund. Mill will do it and nothing can stop it. The other mill I reviewed is the 40 stitches one. Secures to table or can be used in hand. It grows quickly so you do need to keep stoping and more the weight. Tangles easily. I am considering making a few tubes into cushions so as to use up some of the huge amounts of wool I have. Go ultra slowly for the first few cm, and you should be ok. 3. It allows you to churn out yards and yards of i-cord in no time at all. The mill works well with most yarns suitable for hand knitting, including fashion yarns. As my collection of yarns is growing, sometimes in leaps (Finland), I have way more meters of wool, acrylic and cotton than I can process manually. I just came back after some time and saw that your comment was actually under the post about the small knitting mill. Thinner yarns (very thin, like 400/100), or slippery threads don’t work well with the original weight supplied with the mill. Prym. Aim for yarns that have a good, stable structure with no fuzz and small risk of parting in the middle (mill’s hooks will catch half and either see point 1 or you’ll get a clog). This is very useful, thank you. Sorry, there was a problem saving your cookie preferences. If you don’t, you will get a big knot of both tangled together, as the outcoming tube spins all the time. As my collection of yarns is growing, sometimes in leaps (Finland), I have way more meters of wool, acrylic and cotton than I can process manually. The knitting mill is initially a bit tricky to set up (I had to retry a couple of times) but once you get the hang of it, works a treat and super fast. I will be returning the item. Poor product design. If you start the second round, with the handle, and it’s even a tiny little bit hard to turn, or you hear “unhealthy” clicking sound – don’t continue. ( Log Out / I had a knitting pattern that required a great amount of I-chord, and I thought of French knitting and looked at all the options. Once you master the art of 'casting on' - take your time for the first 10cm or so and keep a VERY close eye on what the catches are doing, if they're not opening or catching the yarn like they should, you will have to manipulate it by hand until the machine gets into a groove. If hooks have problem “closing” during first round, when you’re just starting the work, it’s way too thick. They are more like a thick cord. Mill doesn’t get stuck, doesn’t seem to be easily breakable (of course if you try smashing it on the table, it will give up) and is a very simple construction all in all. So, my choice is PRYM, which offers similar machines way cheaper, they look to be quite ok quality-wise and can be found on YT to check how they work (in some countries distributed as “Innovations”). I tried sock and DK thickness yarns in non-splitty smooth yarns but I spent more time either unpicking or sorting out where a stitch hadnt been knitted correctly. Doing the same amount of knitting would take days and days, but this machine can hammer out the cords in a fraction of the time. This is very helpful in making my decision. 1. I just bought myself a present, a knitting mill. In your case, I’d advise probably either one of the smaller mills (Addi has http://www.amazon.co.uk/Addi-Express-Knitting-Machine-Black/dp/B000XT3OPG/ref=pd_cp_kh_2 – smaller size, I haven’t had a chance to test this one yet) or a set of round knitting looms – working on these will be significantly slower, but they come in 4 and more sizes (depending on the set) and are much more versatile as far as stitches are concerned (you can doubleknit, to get a tighter tube, or use much thicker yarn). The first one is like Addi bigger option, makes either flat panels or tubes (40 stitches wide and 44 stitches around, respectively), the second however produces a narrow, 4-stitches tubes. The mill you have to just unpack, put the handle in, take your yarn, cast it on two opposite pins, weight so that it properly progressed through the mill and… start knitting. Always make sure there is a lot of slack in the incoming thread (pull lots from the ball in advance), there are no knots (push them through manually) and that whatever weight you apply is not already flat on the floor.
