The trail is well marked and maintained. This one-way trail walks along the edge of an island in the Haw River which makes for a scenic walk.
Which begs the question, why another trail?
Additional trails are expected to be built in order to complete the planned 70 mile trail. The Haw River Trail is a 70-mile long multi-use trail following the path of the Haw River from Haw River State Park to Jordan Lake State Recreation Area.. For over half of that stretch, the Haw River Land Trail will combine with the statewide Mountains-to-Sea Trail.. Shallow Ford Natural Area to Indian Valley, Red Slide Park to Graham/Swepsonville River Park, Swepsonville River Park to Saxapahaw Lake.
Currently, over 20 miles of Land Trail are open to the public in Alamance County, offering beautiful views of the river and its plants and wildlife, as well as opportunities to hike, walk, picnic, and fish along the river. The Haw River Trail is a 70-mile (110 km) long multi-use trail currently being built through the North Carolina Piedmont. Great Bend Park has a parking lot and a restroom. The planned Haw River Trail (HRT) corridor extends approximately 80 miles along the Haw River from Haw River State Park on the Rockingham-Guilford County line through Alamance County to Jordan Lake State Recreational Area in Chatham County. When I first looked at this address, I thought I must be mistaken because I've hiked the trail but it wasn't at the listed address. The Haw River Trail provides public access to Alamance County’s most important natural feature. Before the outlet malls and before I-40, the Haw River was truly the lifeline of our region.
